If you're searching for a trusted dog veterinarian serving Land O Lakes, Bearss Animal Hospital is a family-owned and operated practice with over 40 years of experience caring for dogs and cats throughout the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Antonio Flores, DVM, a Florida-licensed veterinarian trained at Iowa State University, has been the hands-on doctor behind every wellness visit, diagnosis, and surgery since 1990. We are not a corporate chain. We are a husband-and-wife-run practice where your dog receives personal attention from the moment you call. To schedule an appointment, call us at 813-961-1222.

Our canine services include care across every life stage:

Wellness exams and preventive checkups designed to catch health changes early.
Core and lifestyle vaccinations appropriate for Florida's climate and your dog's outdoor exposure.
Professional dental cleanings and oral health evaluations to prevent infection and pain.
Safe surgical care including spay, neuter, and soft tissue procedures.
On-site digital imaging for fast, accurate diagnostics without referral delays.
Rapid in-house lab results so we can act on findings the same day.
Allergy testing and treatment for dogs with skin or environmental sensitivities.
Drug-free laser pain relief certified through the American Institute of Medical Laser Applications.
Ongoing chronic disease management for conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and thyroid disease.

A dog wellness exam at Bearss Animal Hospital is a thorough, nose-to-tail evaluation that helps us spot problems before they become serious. Dr. Flores personally reviews every case. Here is what you can typically expect during a visit:

We review your dog's health history, diet, lifestyle, and any concerns you have noticed at home.
Dr. Flores performs a complete physical exam covering eyes, ears, teeth, skin, coat, heart, lungs, abdomen, and joints.
We discuss your dog's vaccination status and administer any core or lifestyle vaccines that are due.
We run any necessary diagnostics, such as bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal testing, or imaging, if indicated.
We build a care plan and walk you through next steps before you leave, with no surprises.

Preventive care is the most powerful tool we have for keeping your dog healthy longer. We recommend annual wellness visits for adult dogs and more frequent checkups for puppies and seniors.

Dog Vaccinations and Florida-Specific Prevention

Florida's warm, humid climate creates year-round risks for dogs that colder states simply do not face. Heartworm, fleas, ticks, and leptospirosis are active in Pasco and Hillsborough County throughout every season. We help you understand which core vaccines, such as rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and Bordetella, are essential, and which lifestyle vaccines may be appropriate based on how much time your dog spends outdoors, near water, or in boarding and dog park settings common in communities like Wesley Chapel and New Tampa. Speaking with a dog veterinarian about these risks each year is one of the most effective steps you can take to protect your pet.

Canine Dental Care

Dental disease is one of the most commonly overlooked health problems in dogs. We offer full dental cleanings and oral exams to prevent tooth loss, gum infections, and the systemic effects that untreated oral disease can cause. Learn more on our dental care page.

Dog Surgery at Bearss Animal Hospital

Our surgical suite is equipped to handle a range of canine procedures safely and with proper anesthetic monitoring. Dr. Flores has performed surgeries for patients across Land O Lakes, Odessa, and the broader Tampa Bay region for decades. We provide transparent treatment plans before any procedure so you always know what to expect. Visit our safe surgical care page for more detail.

Bearss Animal Hospital is not part of a corporate veterinary group. We are a family-run practice, and that matters to how we practice medicine. Janette Flores greets families personally, and Dr. Flores reviews every case himself. Dog owners from Land O Lakes and surrounding communities choose us because they want continuity of care from a dog veterinarian they trust, not a rotating roster of staff they have never met.
